They gave me some time
at a BIG studio
to write some quick blues
for a T.V. Promo
but the slot only offered me
2 lousy minutes
then they had to move on
to some other show business
Who the hell can write blues
when they’re hampered by limits??
Pain that’s scraped from one’s soul
should not come in short snippets
But I set to my task with
a sigh and a grimace
tempted to add violinists
and a squeaky-voiced midget.
but I had bills past due
soon collectors would visit
so I picked up my Gibson
praying for brilliance written
by my bone-weary muse
who I’d sorely abused
and suddenly I was smitten
by some sorrows imprisoned
in the depths of my soul
and I lost all control
my riffs flowed with precision,
fingers pumping like pistons
creating a composition
like a man on a mission
offering them an edition
of some blues never told.
Two weeks later, much richer
I sat watching T.V.
and when I saw that commercial
I was pissed as can be…
My incredible blues
had been used to enhance
advertising for “Stay Dry.”,
old folks, safe, underpants
With some poor, old,
damp, geezer
having bad accidents
in locations not known
for such contaminants
but he finds a solution
with his big, toothless grin
and he can go out in public,
he won’t have to stay in
a Pop, Pulp, Crap Commercial,
though I acknowledge it’s need
seeing it mixed with my blues
just made my heart bleed.
and from now on my blues
will not come with restrictions
of two minute limits
and old folks emissions
the hell with my wallet,
I would rather be broke
playing blues for commercials
makes my music a joke
