BONUS: Blue Hyacinth Day

Listen Later

Blue Hyacinth Day commemorates the moment on May 6, 1882, when the 24-year old Janet Erskine Stuart, struggling to figure out whether she should become a nun, happened to look at a bed of blue hyacinths. Staring at the flowers, in a sudden flash of insight, "the Word of the Lord came to her...and she saw it all."1 She soon thereafter entered the RSCJ and would later go on to become the Superior General of the Society.

"Each of us can identify life-changing experiences, whether realized in a flash of insight or only gradually understood and embraced, which are the foundation of our purpose and commitment."2 Following Mother Stuart's example, we celebrate these moments every May 6th.
