BONUS Episode: How To Work From Home with Dr Tamara Russell, Clinical Psychologist and Neuroscientist

Listen Later

How do you create the right environment when working from home, where your unique mind can thrive?

Nataliya is talking with Dr. Tamara Russell an experienced clinical psychologist, martial artist (with a black belt in Shaolin Kung Fu) and neuroscientist who brings unique and multiple perspectives to mindfulness teaching, thinking, therapy and research. Currently, she is the Director of the Mindfulness Centre of Excellence in London and a visiting Lecturer at King's College London, she is also a mindfulness consultant, trainer and speaker in a wide variety of settings, including education and health. Tamara's first book, Mindfulness in Motion, has been sold internationally.

This is a great opportunity to hear about what is possible and how we can all learn more about our own minds and creating the right environment if we understand more about the value of mindful movement and that the journey of life is a spiral and not ever linear.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The transitional pause is a brain hack designed for geographical, cognitive and emotional
  • The movement of the physical body supports mental movement
  • In complexity  we need simple solutions, move your body for self-care, kindness and physical health
  • We have to put mindfulness into our daily lives and this can be achieved through the active pause, taking a moment to look within.
  • There are four cognitive tasks involved in a mindful moment – paying attention, mind wandering, noticing and coming back each of which uses different networks in the brain.
  • Those who are cognitively diverse are just differently wired within one of their networks.
  • We need to approach things with curiosity, compassion and courage to find out what people need.
  • All the science tells us that the capacity to activate, operate and use learning is fundamentally set on top of an emotional system.
  • Put your hand on your heart and ask ‘what’s true and important for me right now’ in doing this you are regulating the vagus nerve and activating your soothing system and relaxation response. You are using your brain to regulate your body.

BEST MOMENTS

‘Mindful movement and mindful stretching is very underutilised’

‘The journey of life is a spiral not linear’

‘To get to know your own mind is effortful to begin to train your mind is effortful’
