Carl Bohm was a German composer famous for his many songs and instrumental works written in a light salon‑style vein. The exotic nature of Hungarian-style music, with its contrasts of mood and speed, was very popular with composers in the nineteenth century, though in fact Bohm begins this piece, originally written for violin and piano, with a mazurka, which is a traditional Polish dance.
