Unherd by Kartikeya Ladha voices the tale of James, who is constantly chasing money and a comfortable existence. He eventually understands how this materialistic way of life affects his self-esteem. His waking experience then starts. The book represents the various transformations our world has gone through in recent years, which have made a break from materialism and groupthink necessary. A story about falling in love and losing it, about realising the good and bad in ourselves, about adventure and travel and about how life can surprise, uplift and inspire you if you let it. Finally, James understands how this materialistic way of life has affected his self-esteem. His waking journey then officially starts.

The author's deft narrative not only successfully captures the reader's attention but also provides a view into his own experiences, which are clear from the way the book is written. A good idea, with straightforward language and well-placed characters. If you've read any of Paulo Coelho's works, you may notice some parallels in the way this author uses a tale to convey a point. The details are generally not excessive, although I did become bored in a few spots.

A remarkable story with a great plot. This highly regarded work communicates a philosophical message through its trip from West to East, from New York to India, in search of roots and love.
