It was known as the 19th century work boat for sportsmen and their guides in the Adirondacks.

Today it's an icon of the mountains, and a new book tells the history of the Adirondack guideboat and many of the region's builders.

The Adirondack Guideboat was the life’s work of Stephen Sulavik, a pulmonary surgeon fascinated by guideboats.

Upon his death three years ago, the book was shepherded to publication by historian Edward “Ted” Comstock and guideboat builder and expert Christopher Woodward.

Todd Moe talks with them about taking Stephen Sulavik's work into book form. The Adirondack Guideboat includes a lot of detailed information - from how the boats differ by region to biographies of the builders. Ted Comstock says there are a number of reasons for a book about a truly "unique icon" of the Adirondacks.
