I've been on a journey to improve my credit in an effort to bounce back from the failure of my first business. These 3 things have really helped me clean up my credit (FOR FREE!) and make some nice jumps in my score within the last 6 months! No credit repair agency required :) 

EDITED TO ADD: I recently found out about a new technology that combines credit building with banking. It's a credit card that functions as a checking account with a debit card (each purchase is considered a payment, so the "credit balance" is always paid off). It's called Cred.ai. Check them out! (I don't get anything for the mention, I just really enjoy using them).
