An Insightful Read
An insightful read, especially for anyone interested in Texas history or the ongoing dilemma of the U.S.-Mexico international border, including immigration problems. Well organized, well researched and nicely written, the stories in this collection illustrate how the historical episodes related to banditry, revenge, theft of goods and horses, struggles for survival and racial tension set an uneasy foundation for current day difficulties along the Rio Grande. The biggest impression left on me is the fact that cultural bias and heritage-laden philosophies engender age-old disagreements, in particular the very definition of what a border is, what a border means, and how different factions see the very concept of a border in entirely different ways. Recommended for its easy-to-read, but delightfully descriptive, prose and for the evocative illustrations of the real-life personages depicted.
