American Divorce Stories

Born a mistake (part 2)

Listen Later

This is part 2 of Renee's story.
Renee was born in 1971; the daughter of a Puerto-Rican father and a white mother from Ohio.
Being of such a mixed heritage in the 70s was still very much frowned upon in a lot of areas in the US; including the area where she grew up in Ohio. Her mother’s family never accepted her and for Renee that rejection will end up impacting her upbringing.
Another element that will end up impacting her upbringing: the fact that she did not look Puerto Rican; she looked white. Which will give her a very cool point of view. Throughout her life, Renee felt like a spy. Despite being different. Despite being rejected by part of her family for being different, she was able to blend in the cool circles.
