Bottled Up Dreams.
I watched a tiny tot once
who spent almost fifteen minutes
trying to get a piece of candy,
that was stuck inside a bottle,
and the joy that filled her bright face
as she worked at all the angles,
was of sheer anticipation
for the sweeter things in life.
She would giggle as it tumbled
near the exit of the bottle,
then at other times look puzzled
when it failed to just come through.
Soon her face began to darken
when things hoped for did not happen,
then she shook it really hard
as quivers crossed her pouting lips.
There was no way I could help her
in a world with fears of strangers,
offer candy to a baby??!!
mortal sin, arrest that man.
Then her mama came along and
in one movement took the bottle,
flung it into a large trash can
where it vanished evermore.
and that total look of sorrow
bred from joy that was so fleeting,
on that tiny girl's face haunts me
a cruel lesson learned from life.
For even though we may have
what we think is good, it can be
snatched away in just an instant,
leaving us nothing but weeping.
Much like her cries softly fading
round the corner moving on
