We decided to take a trip back to our adolescent days -- and one of the earlier heavyweight title fights we both remember seeing live on television. In 1982, Larry Holmes was ruler of the heavyweight division, riding on an unblemished record of 39-0, feasting on middling competition and content to hold just the WBC belt rather than challenge to unify it and the WBA belt (at the time those were the only two recognized major belts). He was still a couple years away from the chase to meet or exceed Rocky Marciano's 49-0 record.

But what garnered the attention of the boxing world was the latest "great white hope" in the form of undefeated Irish-American "Gentleman" Gerry Cooney. Cooney was riding high on several wins against known heavyweights, including a blowout knockout over Ken Norton, from whom Holmes had won the belt in a razor-thin decision three years before. The world was curious to see whether Holmes' win streak could continue against the hard-punching Cooney, and we all got to watch it live on free television.

Having seemingly bottomed out, then risen back to the top after two stunning wins against Mike Tyson (and minus part of two ears), Evander Holyfield ended up pitted in a rematch with the man who'd taken his belts between Bowe matches - fellow former cruiserweight Michael Moorer. Moorer had won the vacant IBF belt in a matchup with Axel Schultz after having shockingly lost both the WBA and IBF belts to George Foreman, so both men had a lot to prove in this one --- though it was Holyfield who was looking to avenge his loss from three years before.

The fight looked like it might be demonstrating that a style difference was what separated the two fighters -- but then, right on cue as announcing color man Bobby Czyz makes a comment to that effect, the fight swings and becomes a war of survival for one fighter, who will see his reputation grow despite the loss for showing the kind of heart and courage that his opponent is known for.

Since we have already done what we consider to be perhaps the finest heavyweight trilogy this side of Ali and Frazier, we decided to go back a ways for a late-night cast full of action with three - count 'em THREE - matchups between Floyd Patterson and Ingemar Johansson. Occurring one per year between 1959 and 1961, the two would battle it out for the heavyweight championship of the world each time, with Patterson becoming the first man EVER to regain the heavyweight title after losing it!

Even though it is from an earlier era with different rules and fighting styles, this trilogy is jam-packed with action, excitement, and great finishes. Listen in as Butch 'n Rob tell you all about it!

After briefly enjoying a stint as the undisputed heavyweight champion, Riddick Bowe found himself without a championship belt after losing the rematch to Evander Holyfield. He DID come out unscathed in his next two fights - a NC to Buster Mathis Jr and a decision over Larry Donald, but was no longer the feared competitor he'd been a few years earlier. He did win the (then minor) WBO belt from Herbie Hyde, however, and defeat the previously undefeated Jorge Luis Gonzalez before the belt was stripped-- but then he won the rubber match with his archrival Evander Holyfield by spectacular knockout, and everything seemed alright again.

But then he faced off with Polish up-and-comer Andrew Golota... 28-0 but having not fought anyone of consequence. These two fights would once again have people questioning Bowe's heart and/or ability, and would, for lack of a better phrase, directly threaten his manhood itself. Happening just a year before the Tyson-Holyfield 'bite fight' these bouts were another black eye on the heavyweight division - not because they were not action-packed or compelling but because of how they ended.

We jump back down several weight classes after the height of heavyweight action and take you back to the heady days of the mid-1980s... a terrible time for heavyweight boxing, but an exciting time if you enjoyed featherweight fighting, especially if you (like Butch) were Irish! Many fans may not remember today the name Barry McGuigan, but there was a time when he was a dominant force in the featherweight division. After taking a loss on points in his third fight, Barry went on a tear, winning the WBA title and defending it twice before making a trip to Las Vegas for a bout against Stevie Cruz, another fighter with only a single loss on his record.

The match itself was a bit of a nightmare, held in Las Vegas, outdoors, in June, and during the day while the sun was still high in the sky (presumably to be broadcast live on ABC World of Sports). That atmosphere likely played a role in the final outcome of the fight, where one fighter essentially wilted under that hot sun in the late rounds and resulted in a shocking finish to the bout.

The first was a fight that had been years in the making, delayed, then delayed again, and a third time, before finally becoming reality and transforming the heavyweight division and the lives of its two combatants forever. A rematch was inevitable, and when it happened, it would have the opposite effect -- solidifying the legend of one while nearly destroying the reputation of the other, while also nearly dragging heavyweight boxing into the abyss.

Ladies and gentlemen, a pair of fights that really need no introduction -- one of the most anticipated matchups in the history of boxing, Evander "Real Deal" Holyfield's two bouts with "Iron" Mike Tyson! Butch and Rob cannot claim to be impartial in this matchup - Rob nearly named a child after Holyfield, and Butch's favorite sports memories involve Tyson losses - but we give it to you straight in this pair of title fights from the mid-1990s.

We decided to spend a little more time in the lighter weights with this famous light-middleweight (or is it super-welterweight?) bout from 2000 to try to unify the belts - between Felix "Tito" Trinidad and Fernando "Ferocious" Vargas. Both came into the fight with one of the belts (WBA and IBF, respectively) and undefeated records (38-0 and 20-0, respectively), and both were ranked top 10 pound-for-pound world fighters (#3 and #9, respectively).

So this was bound to be one of the most anticipated fights in years when it finally happened... but who would end up on top? Listen in as Rob and Butch bring it all into focus round by round for your listening pleasure.

Today we bring you a two-fer episode of fights that helped define the late-career legend of Roberto Duran. The famous "Hands of Stone" had dominated the lightweight division in the late 1970s, but by the 1980s he made the decision to move up to welterweight, which inevitably led him to clashes with Sugar Ray Leonard, in which he won and then lost the welterweight title. The next move was to Super Welterweight, where he lost his first title fight against Wilfred Benitez before winning it in the first bout we cover here against Davey Moore.

From that time there was nowhere to go but up in weight to middleweight, where he lost his first attempt once again to Marvin Hagler before getting a second shot against Iran Barkley, who had just taken it in a spectacular knockout upset against Thomas Hearns. In winning both these fights, Duran cemented his legacy as part of the Four Kings of the 1980s.

Given that their first two matchups were fantastic title bouts that were closely contested and undecided right up to the bell, it was all but inevitable that Evander Holyfield and Riddick Bowe would eventually meet one more time to settle the rubber match. And the result was the culmination of one of the greatest trilogies in heavyweight history, if not all of boxing history.

Though the championship belts had moved on to other fighters by the time the two met one last time in 1995, two years after their second fight and three after their first, the two proud fighters were both determined to prove which had gotten the better of the other after the first two fights had ended in close decision victories, each winning once. And the ending would be all the more provocative, as one would suffer their first loss by knockout of their professional career.

Today's episode brings you one of the most brutal knockouts in the history of the heavyweight division. In 1991, two undefeated and highly talented boxers clashed in hopes of earning a title shot: "Merciless" Ray Mercer, a 1988 gold medalist Olympian, and Tommy "The Duke" Morrison, who'd gained notoriety by starring in Rocky V. Both had unblemished records, but only one would leave the ring with a zero next to their name.

Indeed, one of the fighters would experience a dramatic and rapid turn of momentum, going from the attack to knocked into oblivion in just a few short seconds. Though both fighters would eventually hold the WBO belt, the belt would not change hands this night.

PLUS we made this a two-fer, since the first fight isn't particularly long, and give you Mercer's battle with Evander Holyfield, who was attempting a comeback following shoulder and heart troubles. Both come in with two losses, and Mercer is two years older despite being a 1988 Olympian, while Holyfield was a 1984 Olympian. A very close fight that demonstrated that both were in the upper echelon of 1990s heavyweights.
