JAPANESE RAILWAY HOLDS ESCALATOR SAFETY CAMPAIGN
Through August, East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) is holding an escalator safety campaign based on never-before-released data about escalator accidents, The Japan Times reports. JR East employees' efforts thus far have included handing out leaflets at Tokyo Station reminding passengers to hold handrails. The railway said it logged 180 escalator accidents in fiscal 2017. Prior to that, some accidents were fatal, including in 2008 when an intoxicated man fell from a unit in Tokyo and in 2009 when a woman choked to death as a result of her scarf getting caught in the machinery at a station in Ibaraki Prefecture. Most incidents were due to slips and falls or unsafe passenger behavior.

Bystanders called 911 as his parents tended to his injuries. He was taken via ambulance to a hospital where he was treated for a fractured big toe and cuts. Expected to fully recover, the boy advised escalator passengers to “stick to the middle” of the steps to avoid getting their feet caught in the edge.
