▶ General News: Fake News? Republicans Now Control Record Number of State Chambers. 115th Congress will be most racially diverse in history. Mike Pence told House Republicans in a closed-door meeting Thursday to be ready to move a lot of legislation next year. President Obama has just set a new record for rules and regulations, his administration spitting out 527 pages worth in just one day. At 81,640 total pages for 2016, it ranks first and 235 pages more than all of those published in 2010, the previous record.

▶ Economics: Janet Yellen said she plans on sticking around. “I was confirmed by the Senate to a four-year term, which ends at the end of January of 2018, and it is fully my intention to serve out that term.” Yahoo reports that U.S. consumer prices recorded their biggest increase in six months in October on rising gasoline costs and rents, suggesting a pickup in inflation that potentially clears the way for the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates in December. The US national debt has soared by $294 billion since the start of the 2017 fiscal year, just 45 days ago. Macroeconomic analyst Rob Kirby explains the violent moves in the markets.

▶ Global Issues: The European Union is in danger of breaking apart unless France and Germany, in particular, work harder to stimulate growth and employment and heed citizens’ concerns, according to French Prime Minister Manuel Valls. And we’ll discuss some of the latest from around the world in regard to Russia.
