The Sentient Code: AI and Robotics

Brain–Machine Interfaces Take a Major Leap

Listen Later

Engineers at Northwestern University have created printed artificial neurons that can interface directly with living tissue. Built with flexible materials and electronic inks, these devices mimic the complex electrical signaling of real brain cells, validated in animal tests.

The breakthrough could accelerate brain–machine interfaces and neural prosthetics, enabling restoration of sensory and motor functions. It also points toward more energy-efficient computing inspired by the brain, with scalable, low-cost manufacturing through printing.
