Then came the ultimate test: 82 straight days underwater on his very first submarine deployment. "I went from relaxed submarine school on Friday to being underway in Scotland on Monday, never having been on an active submarine before," he explains. The submarine force's culture in the 1980s was unforgiving—male-dominated, intensely competitive, and focused on exposing any weakness.
