Dr. Avi Vieira is a Licensed Psychologist (Arizona and New Mexico) and a Latino nonbinary individual from Santa Fe, New Mexico. Dr. Vieira earned their doctorate and master's degrees in clinical psychology from the Arizona School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University, Phoenix. Dr. Vieira's therapeutic experience comes from working in a variety of settings including juvenile corrections, community mental health centers, private practices, and university counseling centers. During their clinical internship at the University of Colorado - Boulder, Dr. Vieira helped to create an interdisciplinary treatment team for transgender concerns, consisting of licensed psychologists, medical providers, and psychiatric providers; as well as setting treatment guidelines and standards for clinicians and trainees working with Trans and Nonbinary clientele. This range of experience has allowed Dr. Vieira to work with and learn from individuals with diverse backgrounds and presenting concerns. Dr. Vieira specializes in gender and sexuality issues, including LGBTQ+ affirmative therapy, Transgender specific care (assessment, exploration, and referral letters for Hormone Therapy and Gender Affirming Surgeries following WPATH standards of care), individual therapy, family therapy, and adolescent / young adult issues. Dr. Vieira's approach in therapy emphasizes client directed outcomes, affirmation, authenticity, accountability, openness, collaboration, and respect.
Dr. Vieira regularly provides trainings and consultations for mental health professionals and graduate programs in the southwest on best practices in working with Transgender and Nonbinary individuals, and ethical practice in working with Gender and Sexual minorities. They are a member of the American Psychological Association, the New Mexico Psychological Association, and World Professional Association for Transgender Health. Dr. Vieira has also worked with numerous LGBTQ community organizations in the southwest including onenten, CampOUTdoors, TransSpectrum, GLSEN, PFLAG, and many more.
