The gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke all tell a story of Jesus healing a man possessed by demons. Jesus had crossed Lake Genessaret (the Sea of Galilee) into non-Jewish territory, and was confronted immediately by a man who was a social outcast because he was possessed by demons. In Luke’s version, Jesus actually talked with the demons, and sent them out of the man and into a herd of swine. But this seemingly simple healing story has a lot more to it – controversy, political protest, and a warning about the dangers of getting what you asked for.
