In this episode, we sit down with Rebekah Clark, TEDx speaker and all-around powerhouse, about her journey through foster care, navigating identity, and how she found healing on her own terms. Rebekah doesn’t hold back - she talks openly about growing up as the only brown child in a white family, facing rejection, and how it has helped shape who she is today.
Taken into foster care at just 10 months old, Rebekah’s early years weren’t easy. From dealing with bullying and feeling different, to facing the weight of shame that wasn’t even hers to carry, Rebekah shares how these challenges stayed with her into adulthood. But this isn’t a story about struggle, it’s about finding strength and beauty in who she is. Her TEDx Talk was titled Beyond the 'Dreaded question'.
Forget traditional talking therapy. For Rebekah, healing came from unexpected places. She dives into the alternative methods that helped her—like meditation, grounding, and visualisation, giving her tools to work through trauma and rediscover her self-worth.
Rebekah also opens up about love and connection, and how one relationship, in particular, gave her a fresh perspective on what it means to be seen and accepted without conditions, when she met her now husband. It’s a raw, real look at how love, in its many forms, can be a catalyst for healing. Although hard at the same time.
Some of my key takeaways are:
- Rebekah’s honest take on growing up in foster care and what it taught her about identity
- How she moved past trauma and found healing when traditional therapy didn’t cut it for her
- The lasting effects of bullying and how she learned to let go of shame.
- Why connection and being seen for who you are matters so much in the healing process both
Rebekah’s story is one of resilience, finding your own way, and learning to embrace who you are, including all the scars. If you’ve ever questioned your path or struggled with feeling different, this conversation will leave you feeling empowered and ready to take on your own challenges.
