Sam discusses the fleshly response to suffering and trial which is despair.  Despair leads to self-obsessed darkness that is absent of the presence and power of God.  When we learn how to truly rejoice in the midst of suffering it leads to deep, empowering experiences of the presence and power of the Spirit of God and brings glory to Christ.
