As a black woman and immigrant from Nigeria now living in Canada, I’m very familiar with some of the systemic barriers and challenges we have to face both at work and in society. The journey to leadership positions is a difficult battle where very few succeed and others are discouraged to even try. This glass ceiling still exists even with all diversity and inclusion programs becoming the new buzzwords and many companies claiming to be more inclusive and equitable.
But, Are they doing enough? Are there things you can do personally to empower and support you on your journey to the top?
Well, Let’s hear from our guest today.
Dr. Marisol Capellan is the Founder and Director of Transformational Coaching Certifications at The Capellan Institute. She is an internationally recognized and award-winning educator, coach, and TEDx speaker. A former lecturer at the University of Miami, a leadership and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion speaker, trainer, and executive coach.
As an Afro-Latina, mother, and immigrant she has faced and witnessed many of the institutional and systemic barriers and biases that Black women face in their career trajectory to leadership roles, which sparked her passion for women’s empowerment and the need to increase the representation of women in positions of power.
She is currently writing a book, “Leadership is a Responsibility”. In addition, her personal story of resilience has been featured on CNN where she discussed how her mindset helped her overcome homelessness at 17.
