Mystery providing an interestingly perceptive psychological sketch
Breathless 9781612185699, Thomas Mercer, e-book by J. P. Smith is a mystery that revolves around a woman whose husband has been murdered.
Jill Bowman, after a lengthy wait in the Emergency Room, is informed that her husband. Peter Freytag, is dead and probably was murdered. The murder occurred just hours before they were to meet for dinner preceding Peter's flight to London for a conference. It also took place in a hotel frequented by prostitutes and narcotics users. Detective Sergeant Resnick is assigned to the case and probes deeply into Jill's and her husband's past and the material that follows, in actuality, presents a most insightful psychological `study' of the thought and action patterns of a woman of Jill's background when faced with this situation. Peter was a prominent Swiss born Psychiatrist who worked out regularly at his athletic club and travelled extensively for lectures and conferences. Jill was a still beautiful and fit forty-two year old research historian teaching in the local university. She came from a well-to-do family, experienced a traumatic event while quite young, had a strong sexual drive that resulted in an abortion while in school, graduated from a prestigious eastern women's college, was previously married and had a mentally defective child, in whom Peter had no interest, and she continued to maintain in a mental hospital. She still preferred to retain her maiden name. She had a married sister in Canada with whom she was not close and she did not equate well with her husband's mother. Together they had a relatively pleasant life, enjoyed sex and did not socialize often with colleagues.
An interesting feature of the story is that, as it advances, the reader can pretty much predict what is going to happen but still retains an interest in the outcome and may be surprised somewhat by the cause of death.
In summary, the narrative is a little slow moving but the author has provided an interesting and believable look into the mind of a person with a personal history as described when faced with the situation presented. Reviewed by John H. Manhold, award winning author of fiction/non-fiction.
breathless? hmmmm
I have to admit the only reason I got this book was because it was offered as free. I have never read this author before. the premise of the book is that (spoilers here) the main character finds out her husband was having numerous affairs. this rocks her world all while she is contemplating an affair with the detective investigating her husbands murder. there are so many description and tangents that have nothing to do with the storyline that i skimmed almost the whole book. when i found something that had relevance to the actual story, I read it.
