Brelyon Monitor Gives a VR experience on Your Desktop

Listen Later

What if you could get an immersive view of content without putting on a pair of VR goggles? That’s what Brelyon is working on with a new prototype desktop monitor – giving gaming, movie watching and more the screen it needs.

Basically, giving you a VR in a monitor

What is Brelyon

Developed by Dr. B. Heshmat and a team of scientists, this MIT spin-off looked for a way to give a VR experience without the traditional VR gear. Using optical and computational techniques (and a little physics), they have put together a solution which will amplify your screen watching.

Brelyon Immersive Monitor

The Brelyon screen

This is a larger curved monitor that uses angular variations to create and Isotropic view. The monitor strives to create 3 types of viewing: a 2D view, a shallow stereoscopic depth view (coming soon), and a deep monocular depth view.

The monitor connects to a desktop, laptop, or even gaming system. A panoramic view desktop can be used for every day work, or getting immersed in a movie, game, or virtual event.

Meetings with 360 telepresence (e.g. Owl Labs , J5Create) allow you to put your head into the view and see the conference like you were in the room. I have even been told the monitor is looking into bringing a webcam presence into the monitor so they can see you.

Thoughts on the Brelyon Monitor

I found the quality to be quite good for an experience. I can also see myself editing video, or getting work done with less distraction because I have my head into the monitor. It was only 32″ right now, so I would hope to see something a bit larger (but nothing 70″ or better), and a way to cut out the rest of the room so I can really get into the game, movie, or work.

Brelyon is a Concept

This monitor is ready for production, but costs are fairly high right now. The group is at CES to find investors and manufacturers to get the monitor to a $2,500 level.
