Hidden in the Dough

Matthew 13:33

Hidden means that God is at work in ways we cannot see, cannot manage, cannot take credit for, and cannot stop.

That is grace.

Grace is a baby hidden in Bethlehem, while Caesar thinks he is ordering the world.

Grace is hidden among fishermen and tax collectors, women and children, lepers and sinners, the sick and the hungry, and the forgotten and the furious.

Grace gets hidden in a crucified Messiah, which is about as unimpressive as God can get.

And from the cross, the Word breathes out his life for the world.

Ready or Not: No One Misses Out

Hebrews 12:12-15

The urgency of grace is first and foremost the urgency with which God pursues us. The grace of God is not waiting for you to become spiritually impressive. Grace is the Shepherd leaving the 99 in search of the one. It is the woman sweeping the house looking for a lost coin. It is the father running down the road toward the prodigal before the boy can begin his rehearsed apology.

Grace is God in Jesus Christ coming into the mess of this world, all the way down into our fear and pride and dead ends, and saying, “You are mine.”

Grace has a face and wounds. Grace is Christ crucified and risen for us while we were still sinners.

Grace loves to travel please share this sermon with someone who needs to hear the good news of God’s love for them.

The Airing of Grievances: The Final Grievance

The Wellspring of a New Humanity

The One who has all authority in heaven and on earth is with us.

The crucified and risen One is with us.

The Son who reveals the Father is with us.

The One who sends the Spirit is…with us.

Always.

To the end of the age.

That is why and how the church can risk being more than an affinity group. That is why and how we can welcome people who are not like us.

That is why and how we can promise Ellie that she does not have to walk this road alone.

The church is held together by the Triune God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

The Trinity is the wellspring of a new humanity.

The church is not Babel with hymns, an organ, and a signup sheet. Nor are we here to make a name for ourselves. The church exists to proclaim the name of Jesus Christ, crucified, risen, and ascended. Living, present, and sending.

Yes, we live in a world drowning in words. We are starving to be understood. We know what it is like to be scattered by fear, grief, pride, anxiety, and change. But Pentecost says that Babel does not get the last word. Jesus does.

His word is peace. His gift is breath itself. His mission is mercy. His Spirit is loose. And by that Spirit, the breath of Christ becomes the speech of the church.

Because of the Resurrection… We Are Not Abandoned

Luke 24:44-53

At the beginning of Luke 24, the disciples are leaving Jerusalem because hope seemed dead, but by the end, they are returning with joy. Their direction has changed. Their fear has changed. Their worship has changed. Not because the circumstances are simple. Not because goodbye does not matter. Not because change suddenly feels easy. But, because Christ is Lord, that is enough.

A blessing. A calling. A promise. A Lord. And that is enough.
