Bridging the Digital Divide for Girls and Youth of Color in STEM

Listen Later

“The problem is not these kids—the problem is a society that has a dynamic of competition and pushing out our very talented youth and telling them they don’t know anything, when in fact they do know a lot and should be recognized for it.”
That’s Cassidy Puckett, a sociologist looking to challenge the assumption of “natural ability” when it comes to the digital generation and the mythology behind who gets to be tech-savvy.
Today, she joins Tuesday host Ali Muldrow to discuss education, the digital divide, and her new book, Redefining Geek.
Cassidy Puckett is an assistant professor in the Department of Sociology at Emory University, where her research focuses on the relationship between technological change and inequality. She is the author of Redefining Geek: Bias and the Five Hidden Habits of Tech-Savvy Teens (University of Chicago Press, 2022).
Cassidy Puckett is one of the keynote speakers at the Wisconsin Department of Instruction’s Play Make Learn conference, August 8–9, 2022 at the Memorial Union in Madison. Learn more about the event here.
