Bridging the Gap: Addressing Healthcare Workforce Challenges in Nevada with Dr. John Packham

Listen Later

In this episode of the HEALS Pod, I had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. John Packham, the Associate Dean of the Office of Statewide Initiatives at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) School of Medicine. After years of virtual interactions, it was exciting to finally meet him in person and delve into the critical work he does in healthcare workforce development across Nevada.

Dr. Packham shared insights into his extensive role at UNR, where he oversees the technical assistance and outreach arm of the School of Medicine. With over 25 years of experience, he has been instrumental in addressing healthcare needs across all 17 counties in Nevada, particularly focusing on rural areas. We discussed the impact of the establishment of the UNLV School of Medicine and how it has shaped the healthcare landscape in the state, allowing UNR to concentrate on Northern Nevada and rural regions.

A significant portion of our conversation revolved around the Nevada State Office of Rural Health, which Dr. Packham's office manages. This unique university-based office plays a vital role in healthcare workforce research and policy, particularly in the context of the ongoing workforce crisis exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Packham highlighted the alarming increase in job postings for healthcare positions during the lockdown, which underscored the urgent need for workforce development initiatives.

One of the standout resources we discussed was the "Healthcare Careers in Nevada" manual, which Dr. Packham and his team have developed over the years. This comprehensive guide serves as an invaluable tool for middle and high school students, providing them with detailed information about various healthcare careers, including job openings, salary expectations, and educational pathways. The manual has been widely distributed, with nearly 50,000 copies in circulation, and has proven to be a hit among students, educators, and parents alike.

As we explored the challenges facing the healthcare workforce in Nevada, Dr. Packham emphasized the importance of exposure and education in shaping students' career aspirations. He shared personal anecdotes about how his own journey in healthcare evolved and how critical it is for students to understand the diverse opportunities available to them beyond traditional roles like nursing and medicine.

We also touched on the pressing need for a children's hospital in Las Vegas, a topic that has gained traction recently. Dr. Packham discussed a report released by the Brookings Institution and Trip Umbach, which highlighted the lack of specialized pediatric care in the region and the potential economic and health benefits of establishing a standalone children's hospital. This initiative could not only improve access to care for children but also create thousands of jobs and enhance the overall healthcare infrastructure in Nevada.

Throughout our conversation, it became clear that addressing the healthcare workforce shortage requires a collaborative effort from various stakeholders, including policymakers, educational institutions, and community organizations. Dr. Packham's passion for improving healthcare access and outcomes in Nevada was evident, and his insights provided a hopeful perspective on the future of healthcare in our state.
