This ancient Indian story follows a benevolent king known for his charity and devotion, contrasting with his queen’s disdain for such practices. When the king goes hunting, the sage Brihaspati, disguised as a mendicant, visits the queen. Displeased with her current wealth, she wishes for it to disappear. The sage fulfills her wish, leading to their financial ruin.
The king, now impoverished, works as a woodcutter in a distant land. Meanwhile, the queen learns about the significance of Brihaspati’s Thursday fasts and rituals from her sister. By faithfully observing these practices, her fortunes are restored.
The king returns home, and both he and the queen embrace a life of devotion and generosity. The story highlights the virtues of charity and the power of divine blessings, teaching that sincere devotion and righteous living lead to true prosperity.
