In today’s edition of Bring It On! hosts, Clarence Boone and Liz Mitchell, speak with the descendants of Eliza Tevis and members of the Eliza Tevis Society at the historic Bashford Manor Bed and Breakfast. They are:
The Eliza Tevis Society was organized in 2019 at the Bashford Manor Bed & Breakfast in Louisville, Kentucky with a mission to:
“Discover and share with the public an informed story about the life and legacy of Eliza Curtis Hundley Tevis Coleman‘s journey out of American enslavement, and the leadership contributions she made to the enslaved and free communities of Africans in Louisville and Jefferson County, Kentucky, and beyond.”
Much of the history and oral tradition regarding the founding of Petersburg, the oldest African American settlement in Jefferson County (outside of Louisville) centers around the life of former slave Eliza Tevis. Aunt Eliza Tevis was a black woman freed by John Hundley, who afterward became an owner of slaves. She taught them to work and hired them out to the farmers of the neighborhood. She owned about fifty black slaves. Some she bought, and some small children and babies were given to her by dealers who could sell the mothers to greater advantage when unbound by children.
