PART ONE:
In the fall of 2018, the Bloomington Common Council approved Mayor John Hamilton’s proposal to allocate $15,000 within the 2019 budget to Youth Participatory Budgeting (YPB), a democratic process in which young community members decide how to spend part of the municipal budget. YPB gives young people real power to make real decisions over real money. Hosts Clarence Boone and Roberta Radovich speak with Shatoyia Moss, the Director of Bloomington’s Safe and Civil City Program, and Mathilde “Tilly” Robinson, a YPB delegate, about the YPB program.
Hosts Clarence Boone and Roberta Radovich also discuss with Shatoyia Moss about Bloomington’s Safe and Civil City Program’s collaboration with IU’s Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center (NMBCC) to host a Juneteenth celebration from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 19 in Bryan Park. Juneteenth is an annual celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States.The free celebration will include food, music and games. There will also be a shuttle service running from 4:30-8:30 p.m. to Bryan Park from the NMBCC stop on North Jordan Avenue according to the release.
PART TWO:
Hosts Clarence Boone and Roberta Radovich discuss the new documentary film, Emanuel. The film’s release today, June 17, 2019, marks the fourth anniversary of the massacre of nine churchgoers at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in downtown Charleston, South Carolina. The film weaves together the history of race relations in Charleston, the significance and impact of Mother Emanuel Church, and the hope that somehow emerges in the aftermath. The executive producers are Stephen Curry and Viola Davis, and is co-produced by Mariska Hargitay. The director of Emanuel is Brian Ivie (The Drop Box). All producers’ proceeds from Emanuel will go to the victims’ families and the survivors.
