Bring It On! – November 16, 2020: MCCSC Coping with COVID-19

Listen Later

Today’s edition of Bring It On! is hosted by Clarence Boone and William Hosea. They are joined by Dr. Markay L. Winston, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction for the MCCSC system, Jacinda Townsend, MCCSC School Board member, and April Hennessey, the newly elected member of the MCCSC whose term will start January 1, 2021.
With Marion County mandating today, November 16, that their public schools must close due to their surge of COVID-19 cases, the Monroe County Community School Corporation (MCCSC) faces increasing pressures to also shut down their schools. Although the infection rate in Monroe County, and in neighboring Browne County, is much lower than most other counties in the state, the positivity rate, nonetheless, is rising.
Deciding what to do is complicated by the inability of online education to meet the needs of many students at the same standards now received with in-school instruction. Decision-making also becomes increasingly complex when iniquities in broad-band access and other income considerations are weighed.
The MCCSC is faced with the Catch-22 of knowing that closing schools will most likely have the greatest negative impacts on students already with the greatest need, while at the same time knowing that the public health consequences of in-person instruction are becoming increasingly perilous. Today’s show examines the array of factors that make dealing with the impacts of COVID-19 so complicated and why, in reality, there is likely not ever going to be a way of dealing with this pandemic without the incurring of some negative impacts.
The challenge for the MCCSC is to figure out the best way to minimize the damage both now and in the longterm.
