On today's episode of The 415ers, hosts Evan Giddings and Marc Grandi react to Brock Purdy's delayed UCL surgery and debate what it means for Purdy himself, Trey Lance, Kyle Shanahan, and the entire San Francisco 49ers organization.
(1:04) Per a report by Tom Pelissero, Purdy's UCL surgery (scheduled for Wednesday, February 22nd) was postponed because of 'ongoing inflammation.' Purdy and his surgeon will regroup in early March to try to get the surgery in. What does this mean for Purdy's rehabilitation timeline and will he be ready to go by Week 1 of the 2023 regular season?
(15:27) What if Purdy is not ready by the start of the regular season -- or at least not ready soon enough ahead of the start of the regular season that Shanahan decides to start Lance Week 1? If Lance happens to open the season as the 49ers' starting quarterback, whether it be because of injury or not, will this offseason prove to be the most 'normal' of his first three offseasons with the 49ers?
(31:57) Might this upcoming season be Lance's last chance to prove himself to Shanahan and the 49ers? If he doesn't make headway this season, will there be another chance for him in San Francisco? Even if Purdy proves to be ready by the start of the regular season, is there any part of Shanahan that feels like he needs to give Lance another chance before potentially permanently moving away from him following the completion of the 2023 season?
