Broken by the Word

15th Sunday in Ordinary Time

While I was sitting in a conference a few months ago a priest spoke about the three most dangerous things priests and Christians deal with. Among the most convicting thing about his analysis of comparison was how we, as a people, spend the majority of our time comparing ourselves to each other.  Using multiple examples, he spoke about how this can be utterly toxic for our life in Christ, not just as priests, but as faithful followers of Christ.  Sitting in my chair I felt my soul squirm and try to make itself smaller.
Convicted, I knew that it went farther than the typical acts of comparison..
Without indemnifying anyone else,  know that this homily comes not as some sort condemnation on anyone other than myself. The more I read this past Sunday’s gospel the more my heart and soul knew that I had to preach on comparison and how it can muddy even the simplistic of parables. The parable of the sower and the scattered seed is utterly simple but if you’re like me, you mess it up.
So this Sunday’s homily is about many things but mostly its about comparison and the misunderstandings that can arise from it.
