Set during England's bloody and brutal War of the Roses, this is the second novel in an epic historical fiction series. If you liked Conn Iggulden's Stormbird, you will love Toby Clements' Kingmaker novels.
October 1463. England is a divided nation. In the north the Lancastrian king struggles to hold power while in the south the princes of the house of York prepare for war. Across this land, pursued by the church and the law, a young man, Thomas, and a young woman, Catherine, make their way, bearing proof of a secret both sides will kill to learn.
Bent on revenge for a past outrage, Thomas and Catherine journey to the mighty castle of Bamburgh to join a weakening king as he marshals his army to take up arms in one of the most savage civil wars in history: the War of the Roses.

Good, if a little harrowing
I started this straight after the first book. I found it quite draining, to be honest, as there is little let-up in the sequence of harrowing events that befall the main characters. It could have used some light relief at some point, as sometimes I felt like I was listening to Hardy's Jude the Obscure, but with even more death and misery!
Still, the plot was engaging, if a little tenuous at times. A little more description and character development would have improved it considerably as otherwise it ended up being a bit of a trashy thriller, which it didn't have to be. But overall I enjoyed this book and will crack on with the third installment.
Just too good
so pleased don't have to wait long for the next one :-) didn't get any work done while listening to this and I wouldn't mind but that is why I use audible s
I was there!
Wonderfully written, warts blood and all and the listener is treated to the feeling that you are there, on the spot , watching the proceedings. Each chapter enfolds taking the principle characters this way and that through history but with an underlining love story! Hope there is another book to follow on! Really enjoyed it, thank you!
Brilliant
This is a great book I think that the performance of the reader enhances the overall audible experience.
This is a well written and very entertaining book, and I was sorry when it came to the end.
I found it totally believable and accurate. The fight scenes were well described and with just enough blood and guts, I loved it.
I thought that the narrator did an excellent job of portraying the different characters and in my opinion he added greatly to my overall audible experience. I can't wait to listen to the final instalment.
Cracking Good Read
This is Book Two in the Kingmaker series of the Wars of the Roses saga. I have to say that if you're a real history buff this book will possibly disappoint as this is less of a history book and more of a cracking good story.
I love historical novels, amongst other types of books, but I can take the genre in lots of different guises. This series is turning into a brilliant series with Thomas and Katherine (Kit) on another set of adventures in pursuit of.....well I'm not quite sure...but along the way there are some brilliant twists and turns and loads of new, interesting characters to keep readers enthralled.
The book ends with a real cliff hanger but no spoilers here, you'll have to listen/read it to find out.
