In instituting the Lord’s Supper, Jesus symbolized the breaking of HIs body through the bread, signifying the sacrifice He was about to make for our sins. The physical breaking of Jesus’ body is evident in His trial, scourging, and in His crucifixion and underscores that His suffering was a payment for sin.
