Written entirely in verse, Woodson shares her life experiences of growing up as an African American in 1960s and 1970s South Carolina and New York. Through these vivid poems, we get a glimpse into what the author experienced as a young girl trying to find her place in the world. This reading is the first five poems of Part 1 of her story.
