Dr. E.J.R. David the author of “Brown Skin, White Minds,” argues that Filipinos and Filipino-Americans live with colonial mentality, a specific form of internalized oppression where individuals regard anything of their heritage as inferior to their colonizers. In his book, Dr. David integrates research and history to examine the psychological impact of Spanish and American colonialism in the Philippines. His research suggests that since the Philippines was colonized by Spain for over 300 years and then another 48 years by the US, Filipinos have internalized the belief that they are inferior, and most interestingly, he argues that this colonial mentality transcends generations.
