BUG 060: Caregiver Secrets – Kathryn Leigh Scott

Listen Later

When her husband is diagnosed with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), a neurological disease for which there is no cure so far, actress/author Kathryn Leigh Scott’s very active and creative life comes to a halt. Scott “yearned for someone to figuratively take my hand and walk with me through the difficult times I knew were ahead.” Last Dance at the Savoy is the story of Scott’s marriage to Geoff Miller, the founding editor of Los Angeles magazine, and is filled with insights into caregiving based on her practical experiences.
PSP affects as many Americans as Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS), but has not received the same amount of attention. As our population ages, prime-of-life diseases, such as PSP, will unfortunately increase. The challenges presented by PSP are daunting for those dealing with the day-to-day issues of caring for someone with a progressive neurological condition. Last Dance at the Savoy includes a resource guide and, through Scott’s experiences, addresses questions such as how do I recognize early warning signs and get proper diagnosis? How do I handle the complex changes and strains in our relationship? How do I learn about clinical trials and handicap equipment? How can I make this portion of life’s journey fulfilling? Contains a foreword by Yvette Bordelon, MD, PhD, professor of neurology, UCLA
Scott, a volunteer national spokesperson for CurePSP Foundation, has written an honest and poignant account of the daily struggles of a couple as they learn to face a tragic medical diagnosis and the unknown. A percentage of proceeds from Last Dance at the Savoy will benefit the CurePSP Foundation, for which Ms. Scott is a volunteer national spokesperson.
