Building Relationships, Honouring Treaties
A significant step toward strengthening relationships between municipalities and First Nations communities took place in Saskatoon this month.
The Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association, known as SUMA, and the Office of the Treaty Commissioner have formalized a new partnership through the signing of a memorandum of understanding.
The agreement was signed following a traditional Pipe Ceremony at the Office of the Treaty Commissioner, with Treaty Commissioner Dr. Kathy Walker and SUMA President Randy Goulden representing the two organizations.
The MOU commits both parties to working together to deepen understanding of Treaty rights and advance Truth and Reconciliation within Saskatchewan’s urban municipalities.
It also aims to support stronger, more collaborative relationships between First Nations and local governments across the province.
As President Goulden noted, municipalities and First Nations have been neighbours long before Saskatchewan became a province.
This new collaboration seeks to ensure that municipal leaders have the knowledge and tools necessary to work alongside First Nations partners in pursuing shared priorities.
