  • Episode 6: There’s a Whole World Awake While You Sleep

Night shift can make you feel like you’re living in a completely different world.

The hours change. Your appetite changes. Your sleep changes. Your social life changes. Even the times that feel “normal” start shifting until 3 AM feels just as regular as 3 PM.

In Episode 6 of Built in the Dark, I talk about the strange little things that become normal after years on nights, what the recent growth of The Night Shift Dad has shown me about how many people are living the same experiences, and why night shift feels less like an individual struggle and more like an entire underground culture happening while the rest of the world sleeps.

I also get into the difference between solitude and isolation, why so many night-shift workers quietly lose connection with people around them, and why building real structure around sleep, energy, family, and recovery matters more than simply trying to “push through.”

This episode also introduces a new segment: 3 AM Thought — one idea to sit with when the world is quiet and your mind is still moving.

If you’ve ever felt like nobody understands the hours you live, this episode is for you.

  • Episode 5: The Two Lives Every Night Shift Worker Lives.

    JOIN THE DISCORD HERE

BUILT IN THE DARK MERCH HERE

Night shift has a way of creating two different versions of the same person.

At work, you might be organized, patient, productive, social, dependable, and fully switched on. Then you get home and suddenly the smallest task feels overwhelming, your social battery is dead, and your family ends up seeing the version of you that finally feels safe enough to crash.

In Episode 5 of Built in the Dark, I talk about the difference between “work Mike” and “home Mike,” why work can get the energized version of us, and why home sometimes gets whatever is left.

We also get into the importance of having a real transition between work and home, learning not to bring management energy into your family, and protecting the parts of your life that your paycheck is supposed to support in the first place.

This episode also features community responses from Cobalt Amphibian and Alina, who perfectly describe the difference between how they show up at work and who they become once they get home.

If you’ve ever thought, “Everybody at work gets the best version of me, and my family gets the leftovers,” this episode is for you.

There’s something deeply backwards about working yourself into the ground to build a life, then having no energy left to actually live it.

  • Episode 4: It Ain't Tomorrow Until I Sleep & Wake Up

    Merch Link!

Night shift changes the way you look at time.

You clock in yesterday, get off today, go to sleep today, wake up today, go back to work today, then somehow clock out tomorrow- and after a while, the calendar stops meaning much compared to what your body is telling you.

In Episode 4 of Built in the Dark, I talk about why night-shift workers lose track of days, why “tomorrow” needs clarification, why breakfast might be steak at 7 AM, and how your whole relationship with time starts to shift after years of living overnight.

We also get into the funny side of night shift brain- getting ready for work on your day off, forgetting where you’re going, grabbing the wrong shoes, and realizing your normal wildlife is now skunks and owls.

But there’s a serious side too. When the days start blurring together, family events, social life, routines, and even your sense of where you are in the week can disappear with them.

That’s where structure and what I call anchors come in- protected points in your routine that help keep sleep, energy, family, and time from becoming one long blur.

Featuring community responses from Rave King, Ashleigh, and Liz.

If you’ve ever looked at the calendar and thought, “There’s no way it’s already Wednesday,” this one is for you.

It ain’t tomorrow until I sleep and wake up.

    Until next shift…

  • Episode 3: Why Night Shift Guilt Is So Hard to Explain

Night shift guilt can hit even when you’re doing exactly what your body needs.

In this episode of Built in the Dark, I talk about the guilt that comes with sleeping while your family is awake, saying no to people you care about, missing moments, and feeling like you have all your energy for work but none left when you get home.

I also get into one of the biggest lessons I had to learn: just because you’re home during the daytime does not mean you’re available. Protecting your recovery isn’t laziness. It’s part of being able to show up as a better father, husband, worker, and version of yourself.

We also hear from the Night Shift Dad community, including Murphy, @English_lad216, and @sleepdeprivedbaddie1, about family memories, Sunday naps, and the pressure to keep doing more even when your body is telling you to stop.

If you’ve ever felt guilty for resting, saying no, or protecting your sleep, this episode is for you.

Sometimes saying no to one thing is how you protect your yes for something more important.

  • Episode 2: Why Your Days Off Don't Feel Like Days Off

Night-shift workers don’t experience “days off” the same way everyone else does.

In this episode of Built in the Dark, I break down why the first day off often feels more like a recovery day than a weekend, why flipping back to a daytime schedule used to make things worse for me, and how guilt, family responsibilities, errands, and FOMO can leave you more exhausted going back to work than when your weekend started.

I also talk about the structure that finally helped me protect my recovery without disappearing from my family, why I stopped trying to balance everything, and how I now plan my days off around energy instead of expectations.

This episode also includes responses from the Night Shift Dad community, including Liz, Pamela, @sleepdeprivedbaddie1, and @ZuluSierra0642, sharing what night shift has changed for them and what their days off really look like.

If your weekend has ever felt broken, rushed, or like you spent the whole thing trying to catch up, this episode is for you.

You don’t have to earn your recovery by running yourself into the ground first.

    Welcome to today’s shift.

  • Episode 1: The Hardest Part About Working Night Shift Isn't Sleep

Everybody assumes the hardest part of working nights is the lack of sleep.

But night shift changes much more than when you close your eyes. It changes when you eat, how you spend time with your family, how you recover, how you show up at home, and how quickly life can start feeling out of control when you’re trying to balance everything at once.

In Episode 1 of Built in the Dark, I talk about the parts of night shift that took me years to understand: losing patience, wasting recovery time, feeling more comfortable at work than at home, the strain it placed on my marriage, and the moment my daughter told me she missed me even though we lived in the same house.

We also get into why I stopped chasing “balance” and started building structure, why recovery has to be treated like part of the job, and how changing my mindset helped me stop letting the schedule control my life.

Plus, for the first time, we bring the Night Shift community from TikTok into the show with responses from @coalrollincruze and @Zulusierra0642 about what working nights has really cost them.

If you’ve ever felt like night shift was changing more than your sleep schedule, this one is for you.

  • Episode 0: Why The Night Shift Dad Exists

You’ve seen the videos. But this is the full story.

In this introductory episode, I share how becoming a father changed everything, why I left a 13-year career in restaurants, what working nights really did to my mental health, and how those struggles eventually became the foundation of The Night Shift Dad.

This isn’t a podcast about complaining about night shift.

    It’s about understanding it.

Every week we’ll talk about the realities of working overnight, building a life around recovery instead of burnout, navigating fatherhood, relationships, sleep, and the things nobody talks about when the rest of the world is awake while you’re trying to survive on a different schedule.

Future episodes will also feature stories from the Night Shift Dad community, listener questions, and real conversations with people living this life every day.

If you’ve ever felt like nobody understands what working nights is really like…

    You’re in the right place.
