Markets sold off Wednesday to test the primary trendline of the bull rally at the 20-DMA. This behavior confirms, for the moment, that the bull rally remains intact. Thanks to Nvidia's big earnings report yesterday, we're expecting a big jump at the open this morning. There are two key things to watch: We still have this consolidation going on, as markets really haven't gone anywhere for the past couple of weeks. The over-bought condition in relative strength, however, has been declining, creating a negative divergence between markets and relative strength. If, in the short term, relative strength can improve, the sell-signal will flip to "buy," and markets will continue to move higher. The hawkishness seems to be continuing; Deflation seems to be a bigger risk to the economy than inflation. There's too little demand, resulting in price cuts to move inventory. 5-23-24 Who Will Profit Most from the Next Tech Boom?

Why did we trim our holdings in NVIDIA before its earnings report release? The answer lies in our Daily Market Commentary. Basically, when it becomes over bought, we trim a little, and when it pulls back, we buy some more at a lower price. We balanced out position and took our portfolio back to target weight. What we've seen this earnings season is companies coming out with stellar earnings reports, but not commensurately rewarded for those results. But if they miss, or guidance just in-line, a stock can lose 10-20% for the day. A look at NVIDIA's risk range indicated it was time to trim and wait for the stock to correct. NVDIA is also going to do a 10:1 stock split, so the price is going to be diluted substantially. The AI trade is still very much in play. The market is sitting at all-time highs, but trading over the last five days has been in a very tight range. Price gains at this point are going to be hard to come by when markets are as overbought as they are now. Today's market movement will be triggered by either the FOMC Meeting minutes release or NVDIA's quarterly report...or both. There's a reasonable risk for a short-term correction back to the 20-DMA, worth about 2%. Remember, we have not had a 2% down day in over 315-days.
