Burgs initially trained with the Balinese meditation teacher and healer Merta Ada and helped set up his Meditation school in Indonesia. The practices Burgs learnt there heavily influence his current teaching practice. He also trained in Chi Kung with a
number of well-known Taoist teachers in Asia and integrates many of these practices into his teaching system. He then learnt meditation from the Venerable Pa Auk Sayadaw in Burma. He was personally tutored by the Sayadaw and became the first Westerner to complete the entire series of 40 Samatha meditation practices as described by the Buddha. He was then asked to visit His Holiness Dodrupchen Rinpoche, who gave him the direct Dzogchen Mind Transmissions and subsequently recognised his attainment of some of the highest levels of Dzogchen practice. Burgs has since been teaching both meditation and Chi Kung in the UK.
