Theme: Taking longer periods of rest and renewal
You probably won’t find any examples of vacation time in the Bible. However, the spirit of longer periods of rest is certainly there. Macro Sabbath, the practice of giving yourself permission to take seasons of longer rest such as vacations, gap years, short term career changes, or cutting back commitments for a month, gives us a deeper rest. This is the spirit of the Jubilee year, but on a more annual cycle. It also connects with the term “sabbatical,” an extended rest and renewal period every seven years. However, it is not just for pastors and professors! We all need seasons of extended rest and refocus to renew our sense of purpose and vision for our own spiritual journeys.
