But Now...

Listen Later

Romans 3:21–26 NASB95 21 But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction; 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; 25 whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed; 26 for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

Key Themes:

1. The gospel is no AFTERTHOUGHT. From the beginning it’s how God planned to make sinners righteous. (3:21-22a)

  1. The righteousness of God is available by faith in Jesus Christ. It’s available to ALL because it’s NEEDED by all.

  2. By faith we receive a RIGHT standing with God because Jesus paid the price for our FREEDOM when He suffered God’s WRATH on the cross in our place.

  3. “God Himself gave Himself for us to save us from HIMSELF” (John Stott). That enables Him to be both just and the justifier of those who place their faith in Jesus.**

    The Big Idea:

Righteousness (i.e. having a right standing with God) is a gift of grace only available thru FAITH in Christ, who sacrificed himself to PURCHASE our freedom and APPEASE the wrath of God.

    Applying the Word:

    For believers:
    1. God did more than pardon your sins. Pardon says, “you can GO FREE.” Justification says, “you can COME TO ME.” Are you doing that?

Hebrews 4:16 NASB95 16 Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

    2. God showed FORBEARANCE towards you. Are you showing FORBEARANCE towards others?

Colossians 3:12–14 NASB95 12 So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. 14 Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.

    3. Judgment day is BEHIND YOU, not AHEAD of you. LIVE like it!

Galatians 2:20 NASB95 “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.
