We often think the mark of a healthy spiritual life is the things that we do. Are we reading our Bibles? Are we praying? Are we giving? You could fill that blank in with many spiritual disciplines. Although all of those things are good, and should be part of a growing disciples life, for Jesus, the mark of healthy spirituality is not just what we do, but the fruit our life bears because of those things.
For the spiritual formation, spiritual growth, to take root in our lives, they should affect the way that we live. Reading our Bible, prayer… all of it does not matter if it does not lead us to a life of love. When we think of faith simply as the things we do, and not a life of love, then our lives are not producing the fruit that Jesus calls his followers to in the Sermon on the Mount.
