The Lighthouse...why is it so crucial to a traveler be it in calm waters or turbulent waters?  They are purposely and strategically placed.  They are bombarded during storms by heavy waves and wind.  They are bombarded by the heat of the sun. 

A lighthouse is usually to mark a particular marine hazard such as a dangerous rock, or to mark an entrance, or to allow seafarers to determine their position at night.
