Cafe Memories.-Version-(2)-by-Matthew F. Blowers III

Listen Later

I saw those café
lights in the rain
they were calling
me back again
to that small
stage that contained
an old upright piano
where I played
my melodies that
soothed and strained
the hearts and souls of
those who claimed
the cane back chairs
and table space
as they enjoyed
my chasing fame
that I had still
yet to attain
my fingers pounding
keys in vain
and I remember
where you sat
smiling at me
plying my craft
and how so eagerly
you clapped
your lovely blue
eyes at me cast
and so I wrote a
song for you
my pretty lady
eyes so blue
who made that café
less blasé
inviting you that
night to stay
after my gig
at last was played
and then we both
could slip away
and make sweet
music through the night
you mouthed a yes
with such delight
and we shared bliss
till morning light
but when I woke
up you were gone
into the brightness
of the dawn
no longer there
to hear me play
and soon fame
bid me to move on
away from where you
had withdrawn
but now I’m back
just passing through
and so I slowly
stepped into
that old café
hoping to see
you sitting there
looking at me
but there was just
an empty chair
and I realized then
that you were just
a fleeting eighth note
turned to dust
A high soprano
sigh of lust
a lovely temporary plus
a brief desire minus us
and as I climbed
back on the bus
I blew a kiss
towards that café
remembering your
sweet flesh buffet
and smiling as
I drove away.
as it’s lights all
vanished in the rain
