 California has declared a state of emergency due to the rapid spread of bird flu among dairy cattle, with over 300 dairy herds testing positive in the past 30 days. This declaration will streamline coordination between state and local agencies to address the virus more efficiently. Additionally, the U.S. has confirmed its first severe human case of bird flu in a Louisiana resident who was hospitalized after exposure to infected backyard birds. This case involves a different strain than the one affecting dairy cattle. While the general public's risk remains low, health officials are closely monitoring the virus for any mutations that could increase human transmission.
