There's a human tendency to remain a spectator when help is needed, especially when others are present – the "bystander effect." We assume someone else is more capable, or has already acted. Yet, our faith calls us beyond mere observation to active engagement and compassionate intervention. When Jesus called disciples, it wasn't to stand on the sidelines, but to join Him in the challenging work of the Kingdom. Like those in the Life-Saving Service, who were trained to row into the storm, we are called to move towards trouble, not away from it, offering the help and hope that only God can provide through us. This means recognizing our own capacity, even if small, to make a difference and resisting the urge to defer responsibility. It requires a willingness to step forward, to speak up, or to simply offer a hand, trusting that God will work through our readiness. Our preparedness isn't just for our own spiritual strength, but so we can be instruments of grace and peace for others in their moments of need. Where is God inviting you to step out of the crowd today and intervene with love?
