Ruthie can't stop thinking about Martin in his absence and this manifests in daily crying in detention. However, the daily detention is supervised by the school's music teacher who uses the opportunity to educate the students about how music unites us all and can heal Ruthie's wounds. Ruthie also ends up befriending a student in detention that has been keeping a secret from everyone.
