Can I Have Faith and Still Experience Fear? (How to Walk in Faith)

Listen Later

Do you ever wonder if you can have FAITH and still experience FEAR? Do you want to know how to WALK IN FAITH?

Exodus 14:13-14

Context: The Israelites have been miraculously saved from slavery and are traveling to the promised land. As they approach the Red Sea they discover the Pharaoh is pursuing them and they freak out. These two verses are Moses’ response to them.

Lesson:

When we experience fear, a common tendency is to freak out like the Israelites did when they saw Pharaoh coming after them. We can get so caught up and focused on looking at circumstances from an earthly perspective that we stress, worry, and freak out. Thing is, when we do this, we are putting up a barrier between us and the Lord, hindering His ability to intervene.

Faith and Fear are opposites of the same substance. Fear is faith in the “bad” thing happening. In order to combat this and step into faith, we need to do what Moses tells the Israelites to do in Exodus 14:13-14: stand still and watch the Lord.

We need to quiet our minds, remember who God is and ALL the ways He’s come through in the past, and consciously choose to focus on that truth.

As we stand in faith, focusing on God's goodness, faithfulness, and promises, He will give us peace and show up in incredible ways that we could never imagine.

Think about it. Could anyone have imagined beforehand all the things God did to protect and provide for the Israelites? No.

Think about your own life. Have there ever been times when God showed up unexpectedly? This is the God we serve: the God who shows up and shows out. We only slip into fear when we lose sight of and forget that. So let’s stay focused on Him.

Application:

Make a list of the unexpected ways God has shown up in your life. If you’re having a hard time thinking of any, list times He showed up for others in the Bible and among people you know. God is no respecter of persons, and He is the same yesterday’s, today, and forever. SO you can look at the testimony of others as well as your own to see God working and hold onto the faith of who God is. Whenever you are tempted to fear, pull out the list and remind yourself of all the times God has shown up in the past. Ask God to give you His perspective to see when He is showing up. Sometimes we get so caught up in how we WANT Him to show up that we miss Him when He DOES.
