The republican party no longer functions as anything resembling a traditional legislative force.  It is a party of grievance, coopted by its most radical elements and dedicated to belittling democrats in social media and other media platforms in a way that appeals to the shared childish mindset of its leaders and its most ardent supporters. This is an exceedingly dangerous way to approach whatever negotiations may be possible to avoid the default of the US Government on its incurred obligations.
